Youzi Mauzi

During the Chinese Language Party for Zhong Qiu Jie I missed my chance to wear a youzi mauzi. Youzi is the Taiwanese version of a Pamello. And mauzi is the Chinese word for Hat. So as just a silly fun thing for children, parents will fashion a hat from the youzi. I have such a big head that I probably would have broken the youzi mauzi anyway.

But last week I saw a street vendor selling gigantic youzi, so I decided to do a little hatology and make by own youzi mauzi.

Here the starting youzi.

Using my fruit knife I cut the top off and make 8 incisions about 2/3rds of the way down and peel the skin back.

The I remove the brain of the youzi for later use.

The removing two of the sections produces the helmet.

The youzi brain(youzi naozi) looks and tastes a lot like grape fruit.

What useful fruits Pamellos are! What was your class party for? Is Zhong Qiu Jie a teacher or some other figure? Does anyone celebrate Halloween in Tainan? The excitement here is starting to build. You would be ready with your new hat.

Your mauzi looked like a football helmet. But it will not protect you from crushing. I don’t think many people make mauzi from Youzi any more. It might be fun when the kids are only one or two years old but after that it loses appear. You look really cute though. Your face is looking slimmer every day!!
